App Development

HTML5

Born in 1990, HTML has become the de facto standard for building web pages. As it has developed and combined with other technologies such as Javascript and Flash, so websites have become more engaging and easy to use. HTML5 is its newest incarnation and promises a wealth of new website and web app features.

Whether you want a new website or app, or an upgrade to your existing site, we can make HTML5 work for you.

Client Example:  A recent HTML5 project of ours is the new Orange RockCorps website.

HTML5 -  a little bit of a revolution...

HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) has historically been quite a simple programming language, focussing mostly on displaying text and organising a web page's contents. As websites have become more sophisticated, HTML's limitations have been overcome by the development of external 'plug-ins' that enhance a website's functionality and appearance beyond what HTML can achieve alone.

Flash is by far the most popular plug-in and is responsible for a lot of the animation and movement seen in websites today. However its performance can be temperamental - if you've ever had your browsing session interrupted by the 'Plug-in has crashed' message, you'll know what we mean. This can be inconvenient when browsing and can also add to the expense of website development if the website is to be optimised for all browsers.

HTML5 is a response to this and, alongside improvements in supporting technologies such as Javascript and CSS, HTML5 strengthens the capabilities of browsers and websites so they are no longer so dependent on plug-ins to offer content and functionality rich websites and web apps.

What will change with HTML5?

GREATER USE OF VIDEO AND AUDIO
HTML5 permits the embedding of audio and video directly into the browser, without need for 'plug-ins' like Flash. A lot of the excitement about HTML5 has increased because Apple has said that they no longer want to support Flash on their mobile devices, instead preferring HTML5.

FONT FREEDOM
HTML5 allows for custom fonts to be displayed on webpages. Previously, if you wanted a website to use a certain font, you had to be sure that the font was also installed on the user's computer. To manage this risk, website designers would constrain themselves to only using fonts they knew would be widely available. Now, though, using HTML5, website developers have full flexibility, contributing to the new levels of creativity that HTML5 will bring.

OFFLINE CONTENT
HTML5 is accompanied by improvements in the javascript programming language which now allows web content to be stored locally and accessed offline. This is useful because it allows online applications to continue functioning even when your internet connection is down. This development is going to be particularly useful with smartphones, tablets and other technology that uses online content and will improve the compatibility of all such online work tools and gadgets as their use and popularity increases.
