Governor at the Houses of Parliament
9th February 2005
Governor Technology was invited by MSN UK to be part of the team which showcased the popular WebSafeCrackerz site at the Internet Watch Foundation exhibition and lunch reception in the Houses of Parliament recently.
Governor Technology provided all the technical build for the Websafecrackerz web portal in 2004. This project was initiated in response to public concern over the threat of paedophiles using MSN chatrooms to 'groom' unsuspecting children. The chatrooms were closed and replaced with the new portal, which educates children in the 12-16 age range about the key issues in web safety and etiquette, such as personal information, spam and misuse of credit cards.
The site got across this very important message in an entertaining way, and has proved to be a big success with over half a million unique visitors since launch. Each section of the site features a quiz about key internet safety messages, with prizes for the top scores.
The latest stage of the project has been to add new content, quizzes and prizes, and to make all the content accessible to blind and partially-sighted users, who are as much at risk as any group. Governor Technology built a set of content management tools which reformatted existing content in to WCAG-compliant HTML, and allow the site to be updated in the future whilst remaining accessible.
The Websafecrackerz stall was one of the most popular at the event, with a number of past and present Ministers of State, including Home Office Minister Paul Goggins, dropping in to learn more about the project’s message, success and new accessibility.
